BIOGRAPHY
Javier
Cacho is a physicist, scientist and a writer. In 1976 he
incorporated into the National Investigation Commission for Space (CONIE),
where he investigated and studied the Ozone Layer. In 1985 he incorporated into
the National Institute for Aerospace Technology (INTA), where, during a few
years in charge of the Study Laboratory for the atmosphere. The discovery of
the hole in the Ozone Layer in the Antarctic, made him turn his attention to
this continent. In 1986 he became a member of the first Spanish Scientific
Expedition to the Antarctic, where he returned the following years -In the
middle of winter- to continue the investigation relating to the destruction of
the Ozone Layer.
Precisely, the social impact that such mysterious phenomenon was having, took him to multiply his disseminating activity, which he had been doing as a scientific collaborator for SALVAT editors, for different encyclopedias dealing with scientific subjects. Result of his first book published Antarctic: The hole in the Ozone Layer.
From this moment on his professional activity is tied up, not only to the Antarctic, but also to the promoting of the scientific culture. For a few years he collaborated with the Interdepartmental Commission for Science and Technology and in the Spanish Antarctic Program, Secretary of the Spanish National Investigation Committee for the Antarctic, and alternating delegate of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research. Returning to the Antarctic during various campaigns of investigation .He is Head of the Spanish Antarctic Base Juan Carlos I.
While in the field of scientific dissemination and in particularly Ecology, being Coordinator/Editor of various books belonging to the Environment Collection-FIAT, collaborating with the magazine “Estratos”, member of the Editorial Board and the Editing Committee for the publication ”Science and Social Tendencies”, Head of the Ecological section of the magazine ”Planetary Conscience”, Head–editor of News Service for the platform Internet-Geoscopio, specialized in environmental subjects, and columnist for the Bolivian newspaper ”La Prensa”, published in La Paz Bolivia.
In the field of narrative-fiction, he has written "The adventures of Piti in the Antarctic" which was subsequently published in Bulgaria by the Sofia University. Practically since his visit to the Antarctic for the first time. He began to compile books dealing with the history of the exploration of the continent, giving conferences about the subject.
Nowadays he’s the Director of the Scientific Cultural Unit at INTA.
Is the author of the book "Amundsen-Scott: Duel in the Antarctic" (Forcola, November 2011), preface by Manuel Toharia. The books was published at the same time in Bulgarian language by the publishing house Ciela, the prefaces were written by prof. Christo Pimpirev, director of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, and by the Bulgarian writer Emil Andreev.
